One of the interesting aspects of working with Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering is getting to know more about many of the event spaces in and around Indy.

One of the venues we unhesitatingly recommend – especially for weddings -- is Morgan Acres. Located in Hancock County, this lovely space consists of five beautifully maintained acres complete with vineyard, brambles, orchard, pond and plenty of outdoor sites for special events. The Barn includes a bridal suite, kitchen, (2) full bathrooms, loft seating and dance floor. Two large sets of barn doors in front and back open, inviting natural lighting and air flow.

The large main loft is joined to two balcony sections by arched, wooden walkways. The upper sections can seat up to 175 with additional seating on the main level and is ADA accessible. An outdoor deck is available for expanded seating or outdoor activities.

Originally part of a 1000-acre farmstead reaching from Cumberland Road into Hancock County, the house & main barn were built from the trees grown on the property. The Grand Barn has been restored to maintain its original integrity and design. The property remains a historically significant piece of Indiana history and is eligible for the Indiana Historic Registry.

Hawks Point Acres’ location in Madison County renders it an ideal crossroads for guests meeting up from Indianapolis, Muncie, Kokomo, Greenfield, and other eastern Indiana cities.

But it’s the romantic newly built barn on the tree-covered seven acres, it’s ideal for weddings and other special occasions – and recognized by The Knot “Best of Weddings” 2023.

Built in 2016, Hawks Point barn offers 2,000 square feet for up 175 people to enjoy. Party-perfect amenities include: three indoor bathrooms, heating and air conditioning, three crystal chandeliers, twinkle lights, organza draping, numerous pieces of rustic décor such as wine barrels, crates, old doors, multiple wooden signs and chalkboard signs. Twenty years ago, when Jacquie Bols opened Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering for business, we intentionally set our standards high.

We knew Indy’s catering scene was already well represented but -- we didn’t see anyone else talking about sustainably-sourced, Indiana-grown, and ethically-raised free-range meats, and organically grown greens.

Plus – we put that very important word “Gourmet” right in our name. We believed we could prepare and serve gourmet meals that taste every bit as good as they present – and be responsibly and locally grown.

From the chef-made crème fraiche on the hors d’oeuvres to the imported chocolate truffles at each place setting, the private Zionsville estate wedding we catered recently for 185 guests was nothing short of magnificent.

The fairytale event began with the setting -- an amazing private estate nestled into a hilly countryside in Zionsville. Guests began arriving at 4 for the 4:30 PM wedding outside.

Afterwards, guests convened inside a beautifully appointed high-beamed event barn while the 13-piece band began to play. Fine wines flowed in addition to domestic, craft, and imported beers. Premium brand cocktails were also available including champagne or the signature wedding drink, Kir Royal with fresh raspberries or Amaretto sours.

The décor was perfectly suited to the semi-open structure, with billowing white drapery cascading down from the chandelier at the center of the barn. Tables were set in white linen, with crystal glassware, silverware, and fine china settings.

The reception began with butlered hors d’oeuvres:

Dinner was served about 45 minutes later with an Amuse Bouche of Indiana Tomato Gazpacho Shooter with Basil Oil and Microgreens. We followed with a Salad, featuring locally farmed Butter Lettuce Wedges with Fresh Chives, Roasted Almonds and Champagne Dressing.

Both were served alongside Indiana Jumbo Asparagus with Gremolata Butter Amelia’s Crusty Breads topped with Herb Butter.

The Vegan dinner was Stuffed Portabello Mushroom with Spinach, Layers of Zucchinii and Squash on a bed of Tomato Coulis.

Of course, a fabulous 3-layer wedding cake took center stage, but guests could also choose a lovely French Raspberry Coulis.

As guests chatted, danced, and talked the evening into night with the lovely couple, there were Chocolate Truffles placed at each place setting, as well as snacks on each table.

What’s the purpose of this “party before the party?” Who should you invite? And who should pay?

Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is the first event of your wedding and has three primary purposes:

In short, having a rehearsal dinner helps everyone get to know each other better and establish new ties ahead of the wedding.

So, who pays?

Let’s get this tricky question addressed right off the bat. Traditionally, one family pays for the wedding and the other family (generally the groom’s) hosts/pays for the rehearsal dinner. However, couples are more independent these days (and a little older) and as a result, are opting to foot the bill themselves -- or pool money from both sets of parents. It really is up to you, depending on your circumstance and preference. (Quick aside: Whomever pays gets the final say on who is invited and host of the evening so be sure to factor that in!)

What’s expected?

Traditions are not “must-do’s” anymore. So do what you want. That said, here are some activities we’ve noticed are often included:

You can ask others to come up and do a toast (prepared or off the cuff). Often best friends of the bride and groom each give one. You can also do an “open mic” of sorts.

It’s a good idea to have bottles of champagne or sparkling wine available for toasting. (We can help you figure out how many to have based on how many people you invite.)

Some couples incorporate some sort of slide show to highlight their travel, how they met, became engaged, or their different childhoods.

Event planners are trained and experienced professionals who manage every detail of an event from the first planning stages through the end of the event.

According to Jacquie Bols, owner/operator of Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering, a qualified, experienced event planner can “make just about any special event run more smoothly and efficiently – with fewer hiccups.”

When you think about it, that makes sense. Most people might plan a couple of larger events in their lifetimes, but an experienced event planner has planned hundreds. They will know what is needed, what should be ordered, from whom and when, as well as what to avoid and why.

Planners are experts at choosing the right location for the right event. They come up with appropriate themes, negotiate contracts, make sure appropriate licenses are in place, hire and supervise vendors, figure out workable event flow patterns, determine parking, rent equipment, manage budgets, decorate, and handle clean up.

How are they paid? Event planners can structure their fees in several different ways. Some charge a flat rate, while others set up an hourly rate based on what specific services you need. For large or commercial events, some planners get paid based on a percentage of what you spend. (You might even find that you can save money by having an event planner work directly with vendors to stay within your budget.)

Let’s face it, planning an event takes real work. , outlining what they will and will not do before signing a contract. You’ll also want to figure out how and when they get paid – and what to do in case of cancellation.

“The world of nonalcoholic spirits is absolutely exploding,” says Jacquie Bols, owner of Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering. “Not only are there a ton of interesting varieties of A/F (alcohol-free) spirits being developed, but bartenders are happily crafting amazing and creative nonalcoholic cocktails. It’s becoming quite trendy to offer a variety of A/F cocktails at an increasing number of parties we cater.”

According to the Alcoholic Beverage Commission, “Growth of non-alcoholic beverage trends across the U.S. is being reflected in sales figures. Between August 2021 and August 2022, total dollar sales of non-alcoholic drinks in the US stood at $395 million, showing a year-on-year growth of +20.6%.”

The reasons are interesting:

Our bartenders and party planners certainly see and appreciate this trend – which won’t be going away any time soon.

How does this affect the next event you plan?

“Don’t make non-alcohol cocktails an after-thought,” suggests one of our favorite bartenders. “Instead, plan on offering several types of A/F bar choices – maybe even headline them.”

At one recent wedding reception, the bride and groom both offered a specialty non-alcoholic cocktail in their honor. “We’ve found attendees really appreciate not having to resort to club soda or flavored sodas for their drink of choice.”

Says Jacquie Bols, “Our bartenders have discovered several tasty and delicious substitutes for bourbon, gin, rum and vodka, and can easily make great cocktails with each of them.”
