8 fascinating food trends for 2019

January 22, 2019Lauren Windle

Although we think of ourselves as savvy food entrepreneurs, we are not a slave to trends – but we do enjoy experimenting with what’s new. Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering will always put wholesome, organic, naturally prepared, healthy, and locally produced food front and center.

With that in mind, here are some of the food trends Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering foodies are watching and having a little fun with:

  • Flavors and foods of the Pacific Rim are catching on. Watch for customized poke bowls (diced raw fish, fresh veggies and grains), guava, dragon fruit, longganisa (Filipino sweet sausage), shrimp paste and cuttlefish.
  • Move over Paleo and Vegan… Here comes Peganism, a mixture of both! This diet favors natural whole foods paired with healthy protein and plant fats (such as ghee and coconut butter). No animal meats and no processed food.
  • Watch for food from “the Stans,” countries such as Afghanistan, Uzebekistan, Azerbaigan, and Kazakhstan. These foods contain coriander, dill, garlic, chives and parsley and are simultaneously primitive and upscale.
  • Tahini (sesame paste) is the new almond butter. That and hummus will be everywhere – even in desserts like ice cream – mixed with such things as peanut butter and cocoa. Healthy is in, after all.
  • Seaweed is in! We’ll even be snacking on it. Look for seaweed chips, plant-based tuna alternatives and water lily seeds. There’s also a big emphasis on kelp in things like noodles. You’ll be seeing kombu (dried kelp), wakame and nori in your supermarkets as well as on upscale party platters.
  • Small plates events are as popular as ever. As are sweet and savory appetizers, entrees and desserts.
  • Desserts are going “au naturel.” That means kale brownies in your future, or perhaps avodado-cocao mouse, and frozen raw treats that may include coconut water ice cream.
  • Specialty themed small restaurants with imported chefs from all over the world are super trendy. Watch for odd names and foods from the far-east.

Whatever food trends fascinate you, let us know. We are happy to wrap your next event around the theme and foods of your choice.
